Welcome

Welcome to our Bible study blog! One of the adult Sunday school classes at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Orlando, FL, has begun a study called “The Inescapable God” and we would like to share some of the thoughts from that study with others.
A blog seemed like a good way to put some ideas out for anyone who is interested. Maybe your schedule makes it hard for you to attend a Bible study, so an on-line study makes sense, or maybe you're just curious. Whatever your situation, you are welcome to join us!

The theme of this study is “The Inescapable God.” Who (or what) is God? Humans have a hard time understanding God because we are, well, human. Isaiah 55:9 quotes God as saying:
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

Christian theology holds two paradoxical truths in balance: that God is both transcendent and imminent; that is, that God is both far and near. The God of creation transcends the natural world. In Bette Midler's song, God is “at a distance.” This is transcendence. Yet at the same time, this awesome God of creation wants to live with us! The Bible tells us that God repeatedly breaks into the stream of history to seek a relationship with people! Thus God is imminent, always about to “show up” as Forrest Gump put it.

We're going to start our journey of trying to understand God by looking at how God revealed Himself to Israel in the Old Testament.

Each session will be posted with a Scripture passage to read, some thoughts about what it means, and some questions to ask ourselves. Your are welcome just to read the blogs, but if you'd like to post a comment or question, you need to REGISTER with your email address. Don't worry! We won't send you unsolicited emails!

This study is based on “The Inescapable God,” by Dr. Randall McGee and published by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and used with permission.

Grace and Peace to you!

  1. "God is both far and near" or in other words God is everywhere. We can't hide from God. Also none of us have enough energy to get away from Him.
